Satyan Devadoss is the Fletcher Jones Chair of applied mathematics at the University of San Diego. He holds a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins and was a professor at Williams since 2002. He is an inaugural Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and has received two national teaching awards from the Mathematical Association of America. His works range from cartography and origami to phylogenetics and art, attracting support from the National Science Foundation, the John Templeton Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the Department of Defense. In addition to invitations at Google, Pixar, and LucasFilm, he has held visiting positions at Ohio State, Harvey Mudd, UC Berkeley, the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Université Nice, and Stanford. Collaborations have resulted in art gallery openings in Berlin and Pasadena, and his thoughts have appeared in venues such as NPR, The Times of London, and Forbes.
